Elephants walking past giant baobab trees in Tarangire National Park

Tanzania

Tarangire National Park

Giant baobabs, a life-giving river and Tanzania's greatest elephant gatherings.

Overview

In the dry season the Tarangire River becomes the only reliable water for miles, drawing elephant herds in numbers rarely seen elsewhere in East Africa.

The landscape is unmistakable — swollen baobabs, termite cathedrals and open woodland that photographs beautifully in low light.

Why visit

  • Large elephant herds from June onwards
  • Fewer vehicles than the Serengeti and crater
  • Excellent birding with over 500 recorded species
  • Close to Arusha — ideal for the first or last safari day

Things to do

  • Game drives along the Tarangire River
  • Birdwatching in the swamps
  • Night drives in private concessions
  • Walking safaris outside park boundaries
