What to Expect on Your First African Safari

8 March 2026 · 5 min read

Early mornings, long silences and sudden drama. A realistic picture of daily life on safari.

A typical day

Wake before sunrise, coffee in the dark, out on the plains as the light arrives. Back to camp through the heat of the day, then out again until dusk. Dinner under an enormous sky.

What surprises people

How quiet it is. How much waiting is involved, and how quickly that stops mattering. How cold a Ngorongoro morning can be. How good the food is in the middle of nowhere.

Safety and etiquette

Stay in the vehicle unless your guide says otherwise, keep voices low at sightings, and never ask a driver to go off-road in a park where it is prohibited. Good guides protect the wildlife first.
